About

Learn the inspiring story of Save the Light Lighthouse—a symbol of resilience and community dedication. Explore its history and preservation efforts.

The Organization

Save The Light, Inc. began in 1996 as a grassroots effort led by Barbara Schoch and Johnny Ohlandt to save the Morris Island Lighthouse from decades of neglect.

After purchasing the lighthouse in 1999, the group ensured its transfer to state ownership through the Heritage Trust program in 2000. Save The Light continues to raise funds, collaborate with the Army Corps of Engineers, and lead preservation efforts to protect this historic landmark for future generations.

The History

Discover the rich history of the Morris Island Lighthouse, a beacon of maritime heritage that has stood through centuries of change.

From its humble beginnings in 1767 as one of only 10 pre-revolutionary lighthouses to its current preservation efforts led by Save the Light, Inc., the lighthouse has weathered wars, natural disasters, and shifting tides.

The Mission

Save The Light, Inc. is dedicated to preserving the historic Morris Island Lighthouse as a symbol of South Carolina’s maritime heritage for future generations.
Through community engagement, fundraising, and partnerships with public agencies, we strive to ensure the lighthouse stands as a beacon of history, safety, and resilience, reflecting the spirit of collective action and the importance of our cultural and natural heritage.
