A Look Back at the 2026 Save the Light Oyster Roast

The community gathers at the 2026 Oyster Roast to support Save the Light and the Morris Island Lighthouse

Every January, something special happens at Bowen’s Island. The smell of steaming oysters drifts across the water, live music fills the dock, and a community of lighthouse lovers gathers to do what they do best — celebrate, connect, and show up for the Morris Island Lighthouse. This year’s Annual Oyster Roast was no exception, and we’re still smiling about it.

Here’s a look back at an afternoon we won’t soon forget.

A Day to Remember at Bowen’s Island

There are few settings in the Lowcountry as fitting for a celebration like this one. Bowen’s Island has a character all its own — weathered, warm, and entirely Charleston — and it served as the perfect backdrop for an afternoon that felt both festive and meaningful.

Guests arrived to the sounds of live music and the smell of fresh oysters already steaming on the tables. The energy was high from the start, and it only built from there. Three talented acts kept the crowd moving throughout the afternoon: The Shakin’ Martinis, Dave Gunstra, and Jim Knight and the Daze each brought something different to the day, and together they kept the dock alive with music from start to finish.

The spread did not go unnoticed. Oysters were, of course, the star — but the full lineup of Lowcountry favorites kept plates full and guests happy well into the afternoon. Chili, chicken bog, hot dogs, desserts, beer, and wine rounded out a feast worthy of the occasion.

None of It Happens Without Community Support

Events like this don’t come together on their own. Behind every bushel of oysters and every cold drink is a network of businesses and partners who believe in this mission and show up to make it real.

None of this happens without Bowens Island Restaurant, which hosted the event and provided the oysters that kept everyone coming back for more. And thank you to everyone who helped bring the 2026 Oyster Roast to life:

Alpha Machine, Bay Street Biergarten, Dominion Energy, Family Activity Rentals, Marjoram Cuisine, Pearlz Oyster Bar, Queen Street Hospitality Group, The Salty Mermaids, Shots & Vin, and Southern Eagle Distributing.

Your support doesn’t just make for a great party — it directly funds the ongoing effort to restore and preserve the Morris Island Lighthouse. Every partnership, every poured drink, and every plate served is a contribution to keeping this landmark standing for future generations.

If your business is interested in sponsoring a future Save the Light event, we’d love to hear from you. Reach out at info@savethelight.org.

To everyone who bought a ticket, made the drive, and spent their afternoon with us at Bowen’s Island — thank you. This event exists because of your continued support, and your enthusiasm year after year is what keeps us going.

The Morris Island Lighthouse is a community treasure, and events like this are proof that the community knows it. Every ticket sold moves us one step closer to fully funding the restoration this landmark deserves.

Save the Date: Oyster Roast 2027

Already missing the oysters? We don’t blame you. We’ll be shifting the date to January 24th — a little later in the month than you may be used to, but the same great event, and the same great cause.

Tickets have sold out in past years, so when the time comes, don’t wait. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for the latest updates.

Something Big Is on the Horizon

If the Oyster Roast left you with a full belly and a warm heart, just wait until October.

This year, the Morris Island Lighthouse turns 150 years old. Built in 1876 and still standing, the lighthouse is due for a celebration worthy of a century and a half. We’ll be marking the milestone with a 150th Celebration event on October 18, 2026, and it promises to be one of the most memorable evenings in Save the Light’s history.

Details are still coming together, but this is one you’ll want on your calendar now. Stay tuned to our social media and newsletter for announcements.

Get Involved and Keep the Light Shining

There are many ways to be part of this mission beyond the annual events. Whether you’re a longtime supporter or just discovering the story of the Morris Island Lighthouse, here’s how you can help:

The lighthouse has stood for 150 years through erosion, storms, and more than a century of change. With your support, it will keep standing. See you on the water.
